Fluoride Debate

Fluoride: Friend or Foe?
The topic of fluoridating drinking water has been a controversial one. Scientific literature consistently states that Fluoride in drinking water helps strengthen teeth making them less susceptible to tooth decay. It works in several ways: Fluoride prohibts bacterial metabolism and it also becomes incorporated into the structure of developing teeth. It also helps remineralise teeth, reversing the decay process. Fluoride is naturally occuring in water and supplementing the level to 0.7-1.0 parts per million provides protection for developing teeth. Community Water fluoridation allows these benefits to reach all members regardless of their age or socioeconomic status.  The low concentration of Fluoride used in water fluoridation is not known to have any adverse affects. The World Health Organisation, Ministry of Health in New Zealand and Waikato District health boards all support the fluoridation of water and recognise it as one of the most important health advances of the 21st century.

Fluoride Referendum

Recently the Hamilton City Council decided to stop fluoridating Hamilton's water supply. The dentists at River Road Dental Centre do not support this decision and believe that this will lead to poor oral health in our community. A referendum will be held during the October elections, giving the public the right to vote. We urge everyone to vote Pro Fluoride.
